The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) intends to contribute to evaluating environmental situation in the Armenia-occupied Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh region and other uncontrolled areas jointly with the United Nations, its official said.
The OSCE Secretariat's Economic and Environmental Affairs Officer, David Swalley, said the South Caucasus states could face dire problems if urgent steps are not taken.
He said the region's most pressing problems were related to climate change and conflicts. These include global warming, floods, the spread of diseases by rodents, forest fires and other threats.
"A number of steps are to be taken to prevent this. Otherwise, all the three S. Caucasus states [Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia] will most likely face these problems," the OSCE official said.
He noted that the Upper Garabagh problem and other outside factors have turned deteriorating environment into a serious issue for Azerbaijan and Armenia. However, international groups have been unable to foster cooperation between the two countries to avert potential threats.
"The governments should provide consent to make that happen," Swalley added.
