BAKU – OSCE mediators brokering settlement to the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh have embarked on a visit to Azerbaijan.

President Ilham Aliyev received the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Igor Popov of Russia, Bernard Fassier of France and Robert Bradtke of the United States on Monday. They exchanged view on issues concerning current situation and perspectives of the negotiations on the settlement of Karabakh conflict.

The talks in Baku will follow the mediators’ visit to Yerevan.

The mediators’ visit to the region aims to make preparations for the June 25 meeting of the Azerbaijani and Armenian presidents to be hosted by the Russian leader in Kazan.

The Karabakh conflict emerged in 1988 due to Armenia’s territorial claims. The two countries fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a cease-fire in 1994. About 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory, including Nagorno Karabakh and seven adjacent regions, is under the occupation of the Armenian armed forces. Peace talks have been largely fruitless so far.
