Azeri town to be renamed
The town of Ali-Bayramli in southeastern Azerbaijan will be renamed
into Shirvan, according to a relevant commission under the Milli
Majlis (parliament).
Azay Guliyev, who has been elected parliament member from Ali-Bayramli, said calling the residential area that was established in 1931 as such had caused discontent among the local community.
15,000 residents have already made a proposal to rename the city. They explained the move by the fact that Ali Bayramov, whose name the city bears, had opposed the establishment of the Azerbaijan People's Republic in the early 20th century, came out against the recognition of Azerbaijan's independence and even called Russian troops to enter the republic.
