U.S., Azerbaijan to hold security talks in weeks – envoy

BAKU – The United States and Azerbaijan are due to hold the next round of security dialog later this month, US ambassador in Baku Matthew Bryza has said.

Bryza told the Baku-based APA news agency that the US delegation will be represented at the talks by Andrew Shapiro, Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs.

He added: "We are looking for opportunities to continue dialog. I hope that this dialog will take place in Baku this month. We are currently working to arrange the meeting."

The U.S. and Azerbaijan hold consultations on military and security cooperation once a year.

Asked about rescheduling the postponed joint military exercises, the ambassador said the two countries are maintaining close ties, including in the area of security. He said the U.S. and Azerbaijan assume various undertakings, including minor military exercises.

"We planned a joint military drill for this year. It has not yet taken place, but it doesn’t really matter, because our joint activities continue," Bryza said.
