Azeri FM mulls Karabakh with US negotiator

BAKU – Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov visiting the United States on Wednesday met with the US co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group, Robert Bradtke, to discuss settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh, according to Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry.

Meanwhile, Armenian media quoted diplomatic sources as saying that the mediating Minsk Group co-chairs are due to pay their next visit to the region in mid-June in an effort to set the stage for the forthcoming meeting of the Azerbaijani and Armenian leaders.

Presidents Ilham Aliyev and Serzh Sargsyan are scheduled to hold talks on June 25 with their Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev’s mediation in Kazan. The summit, which is the next in a series of trilateral meetings on the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, will be held on the sidelines of the annual horse race named after the Russian president.

Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a six-year war over Nagorno Karabakh that emerged before the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union and ended with the signing of a fragile ceasefire in 1994. 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s territory has been under Armenian occupation since the war. Mediators from Russia, the United States and France have led negotiations on Karabakh settlement but little progress has been made so far.
