Azeri opposition leaders’ pre-trial detention extended
BAKU – Azerbaijani opposition leaders detained during the unauthorized antigovernment protest in Baku on April 2 were ordered held in detention for two more months by a district court on Tuesday.
The court ruled to extend the two-month detention for the head of Musavat party’s Executive Office Arif Hajily, chairman of Musavat’s Youth Organization Tural Abbasly, and Azerbaijan Popular Front Party (APFP) member Mahammad Majidli.
The defense said the court explained the ruling by the ongoing investigation.
The three defendants face charges of staging or involvement in violations of public order and resisting police.
13 people were detained for two months pending trial as protesters clashed with riot police during the rally held downtown Baku, which was organized by the Public Chamber umbrella opposition group.
