ANKARA – A popular Azerbaijani national song was presented as an Armenian one on a show broadcast on Turkey’s Canal D television channel on Sunday that was attended by Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.

The show host said "let’s remember the Armenians and listen to the Armenian national song ‘Sari Gelin’ (‘Yellow bride’)". Minister Davutoglu smiled, saying "with pleasure".

When "Sari gelin" was being performed, the minister was seen quietly singing along.

Turkish Ambassador to Azerbaijan Hulusi Kilic, commenting on Davutoglu’s failure to respond to the distortion, said the minister "was not paying much attention" when the song was being announced.

"’Sari gelin’ is a Turkic song, and the world is aware of that. And it will always be a Turkic song," Kilic said.

Along with Azerbaijan, "Sari gelin" is a popular song among the Turks living in Turkey, Iran and Iraq. The Armenians have been trying to appropriate it for years.
