Villagers urge Georgian envoy’s recall, report says

BAKU – Ethnic Georgians living in northwestern Azerbaijan have reportedly called for a recall of Georgian ambassador in Baku Teymuraz Sharashenidze over an alleged insult, claiming that the diplomat was failing to address their concerns.

The Kakheti Information Center quoted the Ingiloys residing in the Aliabad village as saying that Sharashenidze had allegedly come to the village tipsy and insulted the residents, who asked him to assist in opening a school and a kindergarten in their language in Azerbaijan’s Zagatala region.

But Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister Nino Kalandadze told reporters that Tbilisi had no intention to recall Ambassador Sharashenidze, saying such an incident could never occur.

"The reports circulated by the media are rather dubious… But we cannot say anything for certain until a scrutiny has been carried out. But anyway, we have no doubt that our ambassador is a conscientious diplomat."
