Czech leader keen on gas imports ahead of Baku visit

BAKU – Czech President Vaclav Klaus is due to begin his four-day visit to Azerbaijan next Monday, according to his website.

Klaus is scheduled to meet with President Ilham Aliyev, Prime Minister Artur Rasizada and other officials for talks focusing on energy issues.

"As a country which has no gas resources of its own, the Czech Republic takes tremendous interest in natural gas imports," Klaus told the Baku-based Trend news agency ahead of the visit. "It is for this reason that we support the Southern Gas Corridor projects, and the Nabucco gas pipeline project in particular."

The Czech Republic meets 20 percent of its demand for oil with imports from Azerbaijan.

The two countries are expected to sign several agreements during Klaus' visit.

The Czech leader will also visit Azerbaijani regions and tour the Sangachal oil terminal near Baku. His meeting with students and faculty at the Baku Slavic University is scheduled as well.
