Young opposition rep convicted over drugs
BAKU – A young member of an Azerbaijani opposition party has been sentenced to two and a half years in jail on charges of possession of drugs.
Jabbar Savalanly, an Azerbaijan Popular Front Party (APFP) member, was handed down the verdict at a Sumgayit court on Wednesday.
Youth activists protested outside the court building, chanting "Freedom!"
Several protesters were detained by police.
Savalanly has dismissed the charges brought against him, claiming his arrest was politically motivated.
