Euronest could aid talks on Karabakh: European Parliament chief

BAKU – The newly established parliamentary assembly of the European Union’s Eastern Partnership program, Euronest, could assist in forging dialog between Azerbaijan and Armenia on their long-standing conflict, European Parliament chief Jerzy Buzek has said.

"The Nagorno Karabakh conflict is a very painful issue," he told Euronest’s inaugural meeting on Tuesday. "You, the parliamentarians of both countries, will make the decision on how and in which areas your countries may cooperate. We are maintaining partnership ties with both Azerbaijan and Armenia and want to assist you in resolving the conflict. We intend to bring you together for dialog, thus facilitating a solution. I think other lawmakers are in favor of that too."

Armenia and Azerbaijan waged a war in the early 1990s. Armenian armed forces have occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s territory since then. OSCE-brokered peace talks have been fruitless so far.
