US envoy cites progress in Karabakh settlement after leaders’ talks

BAKU – Progress has been observed in settling the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict after the Azerbaijani and Armenian presidents’ meeting in Sochi on March 5, US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Matthew Bryza said Friday.

"Today the foreign ministers of both conflict parties seriously deal with the issue, and I think the presidents will step-by-step achieve progress in the Karabakh conflict settlement," Bryza told reporters.

After the talks held in Russia’s Black Sea resort of Sochi with President Dmitry Medvedev’s mediation, Presidents Ilham Aliyev and Serzh Sargsyan issued a joint statement pledging to "resolve all controversial issues by peaceful means". They agreed to investigate skirmishes along the contact line of the Azerbaijani and Armenian troops with the aid of the OSCE mediators and to swiftly finalize the exchange of prisoners of war.
