Top US official to meet Karabakh mediators
BAKU – US Under Secretary for Political Affairs William Burns will meet Wednesday with the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group to discuss their recent and upcoming activities as mediators of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh, the US Department of State said.
During the meeting with Bernard Fassier of France, Igor Popov of Russia and Robert Bradtke of the United States, Burns will reaffirm the United States’ "strong commitment" as a co-chair of the Minsk Group to helping the sides achieve a lasting and peaceful settlement of the long-standing dispute.
Azerbaijan and Armenia waged a brutal war in the early 1990s. About 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory has been under the occupation of the Armenian armed forces since a ceasefire was signed in 1994. Peace talks have been largely fruitless so far.
