EU to launch social security project in Azerbaijan

BAKU – The European Union on Tuesday will launch a $1.25 million project aiming to enhance the enforcement of occupational health and safety legislation in order to improve social protection in Azerbaijan, according to the EU delegation in the country.

The opening ceremony in Baku will be addressed by Fizuli Alakbarov, Minister of Labor and Social Protection of the Population, Roland Kobia, Head of the EU Delegation, and Horst Triller from the German Embassy.

The 18 month project will provide assistance to the Service on Occupational Health and Safety, under the country’s ministry of labor and social protection, and will strengthen the capacity of the State Labor Inspectorate. The twinning project will be implemented by the German government.

The EU twinning instrument is conceived as an instrument for cooperation to assist countries in strengthening their capacity to implement EU legislation. It is designed as a tool to contribute to the gradual reshaping of administrative structures through the transfer of knowledge on EU laws and standards. The tool allows the establishment of a strong and result-oriented relationship between similar governmental bodies or institutions in the EU member states and the beneficiary country.
