BAKU – The Caspian Sea littoral states will discuss the status of the resource-rich basin in Baku next Tuesday, according to the Iranian embassy in Baku.

Abbas Iskandari, the embassy’s spokesman, said Mohamed Mehdi Akhundzadeh, Iran’s special envoy for Caspian Sea affairs, will attend the discussions to be held by the coastal nations’ joint taskforce.

The next summit of the littoral countries will be held in Russia this year.

The Caspian’s status has been unresolved for over a decade. Azerbaijan, Russia and Kazakhstan signed an agreement in 2001 on dividing the Caspian’s northern area into national sectors, with Azerbaijan and Russia each possessing 19 percent, while the Central Asian state received 29 percent. However, the other two coastal nations, Iran and Turkmenistan, did not sign the agreement.

Iran supports division of the seabed into five equal sectors.
