Azeri party quits opposition group

19 April 2011 09:21 (UTC+04:00)

BAKU – Azerbaijan National Independence Party has seceded from the Public Chamber umbrella opposition group over its policy of staging unauthorized rallies. The party’s steering body announced the decision at a meeting on Monday.

ANIP’s Political Council said in a statement that "it is not responsible for the Public Chamber’s failing to fulfill its mission and diverting the wave of public protests in the wrong direction".

The Public Chamber organized an unauthorized rally in downtown Baku on April 2 during which protesters clashed with the police. Further, on Sunday, another unsanctioned protest was held in the capital, with dozens of protesters detained.
