Azeri-Turkmen ties get incentive after long halt
Turkmenistan's embassy in Azerbaijan has resumed activity after
a seven-year break caused by tensions between the two countries.
The country's new ambassador arrived in Baku on Tuesday, a foreign
ministry source said.
Turkmen President Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov appointed Annamamed
Mamedov as his country's new envoy in late March. Along with a
ceremony marking the start of his diplomatic mission, the opening
of a new embassy building will be held shortly.
The relations between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan soured in 1997
due to a dispute over the Kapaz field which holds estimated
reserves of some 100 million tons of oil as well as Azerbaijan's
debt to the Central Asian state for gas. However, after a new
president was elected in Turkmenistan following the demise of the
country's long-standing ruler Saparmurat Niyazov in 2006, a
rapprochement discerned in Azeri-Turkmen relations. The gas debt
issue has already been resolved.
President Berdymukhamedov is expected to pay a visit to Azerbaijan
in the coming months.
