Azerbaijan holds military drills on frontline
BAKU – Azerbaijan’s armed forces launched military exercises along the line of contact with Armenian troops on Thursday.
Over ten fighter jets and helicopters hovered above the Aghdam, Terter and Aghjabadi regions, maneuvering with interruptions.
Azerbaijani Defense Ministry spokesman Eldar Sabiroglu said the drills are being watched by Defense Minister, Col.-Gen. Safar Abiyev.
According to Sabiroglu, the minister is also examining the combat readiness of servicemen at the military units on the frontline.
Minister Abiyev has been in the frontline regions since Tuesday.
Later on Thursday, Armenia’s armed forces reportedly launched large-scale exercises in the occupied part of Azerbaijan’s Aghdam region. The country’s troops are using artillery, which was moved closer to the frontline this time, the Baku-based APA news agency reported.
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a brutal war that ended with the signing of a fragile cease-fire in 1994. About 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory has been occupied by Armenian armed forces since then. Peace talks have largely accomplished no result so far. Sporadic clashes on the frontline continue.
