Azeri first lady condemns lack of int’l outrage over Koran burning

BAKU – Azerbaijan’s First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva has criticized the international community’s failure to condemn the recent burning of a Koran by a preacher in the United States. The remarks came at the World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue in Baku on Friday.

A congregation at a Florida church, led by pastor Terry Jones, burned the Muslim holy book in public on March 20. The move sparked angry protests in Afghanistan and other Islamic countries. Azerbaijan’s clerical leader has denounced the Koran burning, warning that such acts could spark stand-off.

"Some forces are playing with people’s most sacred feelings," the Azerbaijani first lady said. "All religions are very close to one another, and people of different faiths pray one God. And the meaning of our prayers is the same. Unfortunately, we have just faced an act that runs counter to humanism. Someone who presents himself as a cleric burned the Holy Koran. What should we call it? What’s the point? And who ordered this to be done? I am very disappointed that the international community has failed to respond to the burning of the Koran."
