Estonian former FM: Karabakh an integral part of Azerbaijan

BAKU – Estonia’s former foreign minister Kristina Ojuland has said the Armenia-occupied Nagorno Karabakh region is an integral part of Azerbaijan, according to the European Azerbaijan Society (TEAS).

Ojuland’s remarks came as she touched on the Nagorno Karabakh conflict during a debate on the European Neighborhood Policy (ENP) in the European Parliament on Wednesday.

The former minister said that while discussing the ENP, which covers the South Caucasus countries, or other European policies, there should be a consistent focus on the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and Georgia.

Ojuland noted that Nagorno Karabakh was invaded by Armenian troops two decades ago and that about 600,000 Azerbaijanis were driven out of their homes during the war between the two countries, calling upon the European Parliament to honor the fact that the region is Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory. She said this fact must be reflected in each initiative put forward by the European Parliament, the Council of Europe and the European Commission.

"Peace and stability will be achieved in the South Caucasus only after the territorial integrity principle is recognized by the international community," she added.
