Azeri, Armenian clerics may meet in Nov., report says
BAKU – Azerbaijani and Armenian clerical leaders may meet on the sidelines of the CIS Inter-Religious Council in Yerevan in November, Russian Interfax news agency quoted an Armenian cleric as saying.
Bishop Ovakim Manukyan said that the Council, co-chaired by the Caucasus Muslims Office chairman Allahshukur Pashazada, Azerbaijan’s clerical leader, will hold a meeting November 28-30 in the Echmiadzin Church, Armenia’s senior clerical body, and his meeting with Armenian Catholicos Garegin II there is not ruled out.
In April 2010 in Baku, Sheikh Pashazada, Garegin II and Russian Patriarch Kirill held a trilateral meeting. The three countries’ clerics signed a statement in conclusion urging Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders to step up their efforts aiming to settle the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.
Azerbaijan and Armenia waged a war in the early 1990s. About 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory, including Nagorno Karabakh and seven adjacent regions, has been under the occupation of the Armenian armed forces since a ceasefire was signed in 1994. OSCE-brokered peace talks have been largely fruitless so far.
