Armenia blamed for spike in frontline tension

BAKU – Armenian troops have persistently violated the ceasefire on the contact line with Azerbaijani armed forces in past days, heightening tension on the frontline, Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry said Tuesday.

The ministry said in a statement that the Armenian troops have opened fire from machine and submachine guns eight times in five areas of the frontline in the past two days alone.

According to the ministry, the shooting ceased after retaliation, with no casualties reported.

A fragile ceasefire has been in place between the two countries since a brutal war in the early 1990s that claimed some 30,000 lives and displaced about one million Azerbaijanis. OSCE-brokered peace talks have been largely fruitless so far and sporadic clashes on the frontline continue.
