Musavat sets downtown Baku as venue for Saturday`s protest
BAKU – Azerbaijan’s main opposition party, Musavat, will hold the rally it scheduled for Saturday at the Fountain Square downtown Baku, according to a decision passed on Friday, a Musavat official has said.
Arif Hajily said the goal of holding the protest in the city center is to draw the attention of the broad public and the international community to what he called violations of basic human rights in Azerbaijan, including freedom of assembly.
Musavat earlier planned to protest outside the Tabriz movie theater away from the center of Baku, but the authorities did not approve the venue. The mayor’s office said that due to heavy traffic there, it could not ensure the safety of protesters, and instead offered a stadium in the Bibiheybat settlement on the outskirts of Baku.
