Authorities offer venue outside Baku for opposition protest
BAKU – The authorities of Baku have offered a venue on the outskirts of the city for a protest planned by the opposition Musavat party on Saturday, the party’s official Arif Hajily said.
Musavat has asked the mayor’s office of Baku to approve the Tabriz movie theater as a venue for its rally. The mayor’s office replied that the square outside the cinema is located in an area with heavy traffic, saying it therefore could not ensure the safety of protesters, and instead offered a stadium in the Bibiheybat settlement.
Hajily insisted that Musavat plans to go ahead with the rally, with a final decision on the matter to be passed at a meeting of its leaders on Friday.
Orkhan Mansurzada, an Interior Ministry spokesman, warned that any possible attempts by the party to protest at a venue that is not approved by the authorities or to violate public order would be decisively countered.
