Karabakh mediators to visit the region next week
BAKU – OSCE mediators brokering settlement to the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh are due to visit Azerbaijan next Tuesday, Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said.
Mammadyarov told the press Thursday that the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs - Bernard Fassier of France, Robert Bradtke of the United States, and Igor Popov of Russia will hold talks with Azerbaijani leaders and leave for the Armenian capital Yerevan on the same day.
The minister said the sides will continue negotiating "some "constructive points" cited during the talks held by the Azerbaijani, Armenian and Russian presidents in the southern Russian resort town of Sochi on Saturday.
According to him, efforts continue to be made to move the peace process forward, and some issues are being discussed "more specifically", though the discussions are ongoing behind closed doors.
"The Azerbaijani side is ready to continue these discussions," Mammadyarov said.
Mammadyarov added that a trilateral meeting of the Azerbaijani, Armenian and Russian foreign ministers is due to take place soon. The venue and date of the meeting have yet to be specified.
The Karabakh conflict emerged during the last few years of the Soviet Union. 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s territory, including Nagorno Karabakh, has been under Armenian occupation since the two South Caucasus republics signed a precarious cease-fire in 1994 following a lengthy war. Over a decade of efforts by international mediators have been largely fruitless so far.
