Aliyev opens ski slope at major complex up north

BAKU – President Ilham Aliyev attended the opening of a cableway and ski slope at the Shahdagh tourism complex in Azerbaijan’s northern Gusar region on Sunday, according to the president’s website.

The opening was also attended by First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva and their son, Heydar.

President Aliyev launched the cableway for testing, after which he and his spouse went skiing.

Construction of the summer and winter tourism complex began in September 2009. The facility is located 30 km north of the town of Gusar, in the region’s Daghlig Alayan village.

Construction operations, being carried out by both Azerbaijani and foreign teams, are overseen by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, state news agency AzerTAc said. The cost of the project is not reported.

President Aliyev, in his remarks, pointed to the great importance for Azerbaijan of building the Shahdagh complex, which is one of the large-scale infrastructure projects aiming to boost the development of sports and tourism in the country.

Afterwards, the president held a meeting with the heads of Azerbaijani and foreign companies involved in construction work.
