Steinberg: U.S. seeking to expand strategic partnership with Azerbaijan
BAKU – The United States and Azerbaijan are maintaining a firm strategic partnership and Washington is seeking to further expand it, a senior US official said during a visit to Baku on Thursday.
US Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg told reporters that the U.S. highly values Azerbaijan’s contribution to the NATO-led peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan.
He said further that the U.S. welcomes Azerbaijan’s anti-corruption measures and democratic reform, expressing hope that these efforts would be continued.
Steinberg said he would meet later in the day with President Ilham Aliyev and then with civil society representatives. Discussions will focus on bilateral cooperation, security issues, the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh, as well as anti-corruption fight and democratic development, he said.
