U.S. says keen on speedy Karabakh settlement

BAKU – US Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg has said the United States is interested in a speedy settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict within international law.

"We hope for some progress in the resolution of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict and believe moving forward in this regard is in the interest of both countries," Steinberg told the press on a visit to Baku Thursday.

According to him, it is crucial to continue seeking a negotiated solution of the conflict, as it meets the interests of all regional countries.

"We want to make a tangible contribution to advancing this process," Steinberg said.

The State Department official arrived in Baku after paying visits to Yerevan and Tbilisi.

Steinberg said that during his visit to Yerevan he had enquired about Armenia’s stance on the Karabakh dispute, noting that he would discuss the issue with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

Steinberg is accompanied during his visit to the South Caucasus by Philip Gordon, US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs.

Senior US officials last visited Azerbaijan in the summer of 2010. The visits were paid by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Defense Secretary Robert Gates.
