Azerbaijan not to sever ties with Libya over violence

BAKU – Azerbaijan has no intention to sever its diplomatic ties with Libya over the putdown of protests in the country, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov was quoted by Ukrainian media as saying on Wednesday.

Mammadyarov told a press conference with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Konstantin Grishchenko in Kyiv that based on international practices, he does not believe severing ties would contribute to stabilizing the situation in Libya.

"I believe that stabilizing the situation in this country requires more diplomatic efforts, more talks and closer contact with all sides that are on different sides of the barricades," the minister said.

Libya's crackdown on protesters has killed nearly 300 people, according to a partial count by the New York-based Human Rights Watch.
