Seven Azeri soldiers killed in military base shooting
BAKU – Seven Azerbaijani soldiers were killed on Sunday morning in a Defense Ministry military unit, the ministry said, calling the incident "a serious crime". Causes of the incident are not disclosed.
Reports said that a soldier at a military unit based in the country’s western Goygol region opened fire from a submachine gun, killing his fellow servicemen. Those killed were aged 20 or 21.
The Defense Ministry and Military Prosecutor's Office have launched an investigation.
In January 2010, two Azerbaijani soldiers opened fire on a group of officers, killing four and wounding two before the shooters committed suicide.
Jasur Sumerinli, head of the Azerbaijani military analysis center Doktrina, says that whereas three Azerbaijani soldiers have been killed in clashes this year, the number of noncombat deaths has reached 18. The deaths occurred for a variety of reasons, including snow slides, carbon monoxide poisoning, mishandling of weapons and suicides, but most of them resulted from violations of statutes, Sumerinli said.
