Azeri soldier killed, another wounded in ceasefire breaches

BAKU – A soldier of Azerbaijani armed forces has been killed and another wounded in ceasefire violations by Armenian troops, Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry said.

A 21-year-old serviceman was killed near a village of the Goranboy region on Sunday. On the same day, a 19-year-old Azerbaijani serviceman was severely wounded in the Fuzuli region.

Armenian troops, from their positions in the occupied parts of the two regions, fired at Azerbaijani positions seven times with interruptions, the Azerbaijani ministry said.

A fragile ceasefire has been in place between the two countries since a brutal war in the early 1990s that claimed some 30,000 lives and displaced about one million Azerbaijanis. OSCE-brokered peace talks have been largely fruitless so far and sporadic clashes on the frontline continue.
