US intelligence chief cites risk of fresh war in Karabakh

BAKU – Persistent skirmishes along the line of contact between Armenian and Azerbaijani troops increase the risk of an outbreak of minor military action, US Director of National Intelligence James Clapper told a congressional panel last week.

In remarks, disclosed on Monday, Clapper termed the unresolved conflicts in the Caucasus, including the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh, as potential hotspots of the Eurasia region.

In a report that is part of US intelligence bodies’ annual assessment of the global situation, he said the lack of confidence between the conflict parties and increased tough rhetoric, as well as clashes along the Line of Contact that continued last summer increase the risk of minor hostilities.

Clapper charged that the Azerbaijani government appears satisfied with the stalled process of Turkey-Armenia reconciliation, but it intends to draw Western attention to Azerbaijan’s interests "at Armenia’s expense".
