Azeri soldier wounded in ceasefire breach

BAKU – A soldier of Azerbaijan’s armed forces was wounded after Armenian troops violated ceasefire near Azerbaijan’s Terter region on Thursday morning, Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry told AssA-Irada.

The 19-year-old serviceman was hospitalized with a chest wound.

Armenian armed forces also opened fire at Azerbaijani positions in Azerbaijan’s Gazakh region three times from Armenia’s Ijevan and Noyenberyan regions on Wednesday and in the early hours on Thursday. The fire ceased after retaliation, with no casualties reported.

The two South Caucasus republics waged a war in the early 1990s, which claimed some 30,000 lives and displaced about a million Azerbaijanis. Armenia has been occupying over 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s territory since then. A ceasefire accord was signed in 1994, but OSCE-brokered peace talks have been largely fruitless so far.
