OSCE’s Azubalis, Clinton discuss Karabakh in Washington
WASHINGTON, D.C. – OSCE Chairperson-in-Office Audronius Azubalis and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have discussed in Washington ways of advancing settlement of protracted conflicts in the OSCE member states, including the Armenia-Azerbaijan dispute over Nagorno Karabakh.
Azubalis, Lithuania’s Foreign Minister, said the Karabakh problem is one of his country’s top priorities during its 2011 OSCE chairmanship.
"Greater engagement of the [mediating] OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs in the process is crucial for reducing tension in Nagorno Karabakh and the surrounding regions," Azubalis said.
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a precarious cease-fire in 1994. Armenian armed forces have since occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's territory, including Nagorno Karabakh, defying international calls and UN resolutions. Years of peace talks, brokered by the United States, Russia and France through the Minsk Group, have been largely fruitless so far.
