Azeri, Armenian leaders’ talks due March 5
BAKU – The Azerbaijani, Armenian and Russian presidents are due to hold their next trilateral meeting to discuss the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh in Sochi, Russia on March 5, newly appointed US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Matthew Bryza has said.
The last round of talks between Presidents Ilham Aliyev and Serzh Sargsyan took place with their Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev’s mediation in late October 2010 in Astrakhan.
Bryza told journalists that the long-standing conflict can be resolved only in peace and international mediators’ task is to prevent the conflict parties from resorting to military action.
"In my capacity I will do everything I can to assist the co-chairs [of the mediating OSCE Minsk Group] in negotiations. The main goal here is to reach lasting peace on the basis of mutual compromise."
According to Bryza, a peaceful settlement of the Karabakh dispute would bring stability to the whole region and increase the region’s strategic importance.
