Some 200 Azeri officials arraigned for graft since 2005
198 officials have been charged with bribery and abuse of power in Azerbaijan since 2005, the anti-corruption body said.
102 relevant criminal cases have been forwarded to courts, head of the Department on Fighting Corruption under the Prosecutor General's Office, Kamran Aliyev, told the press.
He said 20 of the cases being investigated were related to graft mainly in the education, healthcare and local bodies. 28 criminal cases are currently under way to arraign some 30 officials.
Aliyev said that to step up combat against corruption, a hotline has been set up on the Prosecutor General's instructions to inform the anti-corruption body of such cases.
"These appeals are immediately scrutinized and preliminary data provided 24/7 to those filing them. Moreover, citizens may appeal to the Prosecutor General's Office via e-mail," Aliyev said.
The anti-corruption department was established in 2005.
According to Prosecutor General Zakir Garalov, 26 state servants were arraigned in the first quarter of 2008.
US State Department and other international groups have cited high corruption level in Azerbaijan in their reports.
