Considerable results were achieved in fighting international terror, separatism and religious extremism in Azerbaijan in 2007, National Security Minister, Lieut-Gen. Eldar Mahmudov says.
Three extremist armed groups were seized over crimes including ties with such terror groups as Al-Qaeda and Al-Jihad, high treason and coup attempts. 40 members of the criminal groups were arrested, including 16 persons included in the group called "Forest brothers" that was responsible for armed attacks, the minister told an event dedicated to the 89th anniversary of the country's security bodies on Sunday.
Mahmudov reminded that nine members of the religious extremist group masterminding attacks on the embassies of Western countries in Baku were arraigned. 20 persons involved in subversive intelligence activities in the country were detained last year, including 13 who were engaged in spying for Armenia, which occupies part of Azerbaijani land.
