Presidential talks on Karabakh on agenda - Russia’s OSCE envoy

MOSCOW – Intensive consultations are underway among the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia that could set the stage for a meeting of the three countries’ leaders to discuss the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh, the Russian representative at the OSCE Anvar Azimov was quoted as saying by Russia’s ITAR-TASS news agency.

"The frequency of such meetings shows the seriousness of the work carried out in this format and focus of the parties on specific and practical results. Thus, a proper basis is being developed for a new meeting of Azerbaijani, Armenian and Russian leaders," Azimov said at a meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council in Vienna.

According to him, discussions both in the framework of Russia-EU dialogue and the OSCE will contribute to resolution of conflicts in the South Caucasus region. They aim to contribute to reaching agreements, which will meet the interests of all the countries involved and European security.

Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a cease-fire in 1994. Armenian armed forces have been occupying over 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s territory since then. Russia co-chairs the OSCE Minsk Group brokering the peace process, along with the United States and France. Peace talks have been largely fruitless so far.
