OSCE mediators’ talks in Yerevan not detailed
YEREVAN– OSCE mediators brokering settlement to the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh held talks with top officials in Yerevan on Wednesday.
The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Igor Popov of Russia, Bernard Fassier of France and Robert Bradtke of the United States – as well as the personal representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Andrzej Kasprzyk, met separately with Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and Foreign Minister Eduard Nalbandian.
No details of discussions were reported. The Armenian Foreign Ministry merely said that the outcomes of the January 24 meeting of the Azerbaijani, Armenian and Russian foreign ministers held in Moscow had been discussed.
Armenian media reported that if the weather is suitable, the co-chairs would leave Yerevan for the Armenia-occupied Nagorno Karabakh region of Azerbaijan on a helicopter.
On Thursday, the mediators are due to arrive in Baku where they will meet with President Ilham Aliyev and Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov.
The Karabakh conflict emerged in 1988 due to Armenia’s territorial claims. The two countries fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a cease-fire in 1994. About 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory, including Nagorno Karabakh and seven adjacent regions, is under the occupation of the Armenian armed forces. Peace talks have been largely fruitless so far.
