OSCE mediators to start visit to the region Wed.

BAKU – OSCE mediators brokering settlement to the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh are due to visit the region on Wednesday and Thursday.

The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Igor Popov of Russia, Bernard Fassier of France and Robert Bradtke of the United States – on Thursday will arrive in Baku where they will meet with Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov, the spokesman for the Azerbaijani ministry Elkhan Polukhov said.

The talks in the Azerbaijani capital will follow the mediators’ visit to Yerevan. The co-chairs are also expected to visit Khankandi, the center of the self-proclaimed Nagorno Karabakh republic, Armenian media reported.

The Karabakh conflict emerged in 1988 due to Armenia’s territorial claims. The two countries fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a cease-fire in 1994. About 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory, including Nagorno Karabakh and seven adjacent regions, is under the occupation of the Armenian armed forces. Peace talks have been largely fruitless so far.
