Two officials face charges after store owner’s suicide

BAKU – Two government officials have been arrested and charged with abuse of power after a resident of Azerbaijan’s northwestern town of Shaki committed suicide following the demolition of his store, the Prosecutor-General’s Office said.

It said in a statement that last Thursday, deputy mayor of Shaki, Eldaniz Gahramanov, and the city’s chief architect, Yusif Abdurahmanov, ordered to demolish the store owned by Hikmat Salimov without a relevant court ruling. The two officials had part of the store leveled with a tractor, thus violating Salimov’s constitutional rights.

According to the Prosecutor-General’s Office, Salimov had built his store illegally. The Shaki municipality issued a warning and fined him for 20 manats ($25).

Salimov killed himself by jumping off a river overpass.
