Azeri leader mulls closer co-op with French senators
BAKU – Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Monday hosted French senators to discuss ways of expanding relations between the two countries and prospects for inter-parliamentary cooperation.
The delegation of a joint taskforce’s members, headed by member of the French Senate Nathalie Goulet, also met with Azerbaijani Parliament Speaker Ogtay Asadov.
Asadov said bilateral relations rose to a higher level since Azerbaijan gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
"It is not accidental that when the world economy faced a crisis in 2009, the Azerbaijani-French trade turnover reached 2 billion euros. French companies are closely involved in the production of hydrocarbons in the Caspian Sea."
Asadov said a solid legal framework is in place to further deepen bilateral cooperation, as the two countries have signed 35 documents to date.
He also thanked Sen. Goulet for conveying the truth about the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh in the French Senate.
Goulet said people from many walks of life are represented in the French-Azerbaijani taskforce.
"Our intention is not to compete with the friendship group established in the [French] parliament. Our goal is to make a new contribution to the strengthening of relations between France and Azerbaijan."
