Azeris to protest Iran in Sweden

STOCKHOLM – An Azerbaijani-Swedish group will protest outside the Iranian embassy in Stockholm on Sunday against Iran’s moves defying Azerbaijan.

In a statement that called on Azerbaijanis living in Sweden to join the protest, the Azerbaijani-Swedish Federation said Iran has been pursuing hostile and provocative campaigns against Azerbaijan.

The statement cited numerous examples of Iran’s 20-year-long policy defying Azerbaijan. It condemned the military assistance to Armenia, which has occupied a part of Azerbaijani territory since a war over Nagorno Karabakh in the 1990s, and prohibition of commemorating the Azerbaijanis killed in Karabakh in South Azerbaijan (northern Iran) mosques. The group also denounced the threats to use force against Azerbaijan in the resource-rich Caspian Sea, the creation of strongholds for "exporting" religious radicalism to the neighboring country and anti-Azerbaijani television broadcasts.

The statement also said the Islamic Republic of Iran permits running Armenian schools, sports clubs and media outlets on its soil, but is banning institutions that could promote the values of Muslim Turks, and is also prosecuting Azerbaijani intellectuals.

Azerbaijanis have already held protests in Baku, Istanbul and Ankara this week to condemn Iran’s interference with Azerbaijan’s affairs and the Iranian Sahar TV channel’s broadcasts.
