Azeri customs officers charged with graft

BAKU – Azerbaijan’s customs committee has exposed an 11-people-strong group suspected of corruption-related crimes and filed criminal charges, the committee chairman said.

Aydin Aliyev told reporters on Thursday that the group’s members, including four employees of customs bodies and representatives of several companies, are charged with forgery of documents, bribery and other crimes.

Aliyev added that investigation into the case has been ongoing for about a year.

A number of senior Azerbaijani officials have held extraordinary meetings in the last few days, dismissing and ordering punitive action against government workers who fail to properly do their job. The measures follow last Thursday’s meeting of the Commission to Fight Corruption, during which its chairman, Presidential Administration chief Ramiz Mehdiyev pointed to a number of shortfalls in the combat against corruption.
