Azeri opposition urges to take down Mubarak’s monument
BAKU – Azerbaijan’s opposition has demanded to take down a monument near Baku to Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak, who faces public ire that has boiled into mass protests, a party leader has said.
Igbal Agazada, chairman of Umid (Hope) Party, said in parliament Tuesday that "if a nation is ousting its dictator, its monument in Azerbaijan should be removed as well".
Meanwhile, security was tightened around the memorial, which is located in the Misir park in Khirdalan, 10 km from the capital Baku, as a precaution due to the riots in Egypt.
Khirdalan was declared a sister city with the Egyptian city of Qalyubia in 2008, and the street where the park is located is called Qalyubia as well. Along with Hosny Mubarak’s monument, it has a number of other memorials brought from Egypt.
The Egyptian government has named one of Qalyubia’s streets "Absheron".
