Azeri ruling party to query foreign missions on ‘security alert’
BAKU – The ruling Yeni (New) Azerbaijan Party (YAP) believes official enquiries should be sent to the US and British embassies to demand an explanation of their recent warnings about an alleged threat of terrorist attacks in Azerbaijan.
"The U.S. and British embassies have called upon their citizens living in Azerbaijan to be vigilant and warned of the threat of terrorist attacks in our country. This matter should be investigated on the ground," YAP Deputy Executive Secretary Mubariz Gurbanly said. "Requests should be sent to the two embassies prompting them to explain on what grounds they are spreading such information. Social and political stability is observed in Azerbaijan."
YAP Deputy Chairman Ali Ahmadov also deems it necessary to demand an explanation.
"Some may attempt to undermine the social and political stability in Azerbaijan. But I want to publicly declare that there is no threat to the country's citizens or visitors in Azerbaijan," he said.
Earlier, the State Department issued a statement alerting US citizens of "the potential for attacks in Azerbaijan", including those against American interests. It said US nationals "should remain vigilant, particularly in public places associated with the Western community" and "remain aware of their surroundings". A similar warning was issued by the British Foreign Office based on the US government’s warning. Azerbaijani law enforcement officials have dismissed the potential threat.
