Azeri customs committee buys new boats

BAKU – Azerbaijan’s customs committee on Friday presented its newly purchased three boats and 42 vehicles.

Its chairman Aydin Aliyev said the boats will be operated by the committee’s department in charge of protecting the country’s economic interests in the Caspian Sea, while the Volkswagen Jetta vehicles will be at the entire committee’s disposal.

"The department, which began its work several years ago, could not operate in full capacity due to the lack of boats. It was therefore pivotal to supply it with boats. The main goal here is to carry out prompt operations and to counter smuggling."

Aliyev said such boats are used by the customs services and coast guards of Scandinavian countries.

"The boats, made in Estonia under the Finnish license, are 16 meters long and have a speed of 42 miles per hour. Their nocturnal devices provide visibility over a 38-mile range. The loading capacity is 5 tons of cargo and 16 people, including crew members."
