Azeri officer killed in ceasefire breach

BAKU – An officer of Azerbaijan’s armed forces was killed in a ceasefire violation by Armenian troops on Tuesday, the Defense Ministry told AssA-Irada.

Lieut. Zamin Mammadov, 25, succumbed to Armenian fire in a village of Azerbaijan’s Aghdam region.

A fragile ceasefire has been in place between the two countries since a brutal war in the early 1990s that claimed some 30,000 lives and displaced about one million Azerbaijanis. OSCE-brokered peace talks have been largely fruitless so far and sporadic clashes on the frontline continue.
