Turkish FM accuses Armenia of breaching CoE values

ANKARA – A settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict will bring peace and stability to the South Caucasus region, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe on Monday.

Speaking at the PACE winter session, Davutoglu said security and normalized relations in the South Caucasus require normalizing not only Turkish-Armenian but also Armenian-Azerbaijani relations.

Davutoglu accused Armenia of defying the Council of Europe’s key values. "Azerbaijan is a member of the CoE, and if Armenia occupies 20 percent of its territory, this means a violation of the organization’s core values."

According to Davutoglu, if Armenia honors all CoE values, peace will be achieved in this part of Europe. "I think that in this case, the relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia will significantly improve," Davutoglu said.

According to him, Turkey "sees its friends" in all neighboring countries, and if Armenia "also wants to see only friends around", it must view Azerbaijan as a friendly nation as well.

"Turkey is ready to openly discuss all issues with its neighbors. The signing of the protocols in 2009 to normalize relations with Armenia pursued multiple objectives," Davutoglu said.
