Tunisia turmoil raises concerns over Azeri citizens

BAKU – Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry has appealed to Tunisia to clarify whether or not there are Azerbaijani citizens in the country, amid unrest in the north African country that followed the government’s collapse.

The Azerbaijani embassy in Morocco submitted a relevant note to the Tunisian Foreign Ministry, the Azerbaijani ministry told AssA-Irada.

It said in a statement that it was revealed with the aid of Azerbaijani representatives in Tunisia that there are no Azerbaijani businessmen or tourists there; Azerbaijani citizens residing in the country were not hurt and are in no need to return to Azerbaijan.

Tunisia's President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali has stepped down after 23 years in power amid unprecedented protests on the streets of the capital Tunis and left the country for Saudi Arabia. About 80 people have been reportedly killed in the protests against alleged poverty, corruption and political repression.

A number of countries have begun to withdraw their citizens from Tunisia.
